Caribbean: Things to See and Beaches to Visit

With winter coming, you might already be thinking about a tropical escape. The Caribbean is the perfect destination to escape the snow, ice, and wind of winter. Accessible by either cruise ship or airplane, destinations such as Aruba, Belize, and Mexico provide opportunities for sightseeing, culture, snorkeling, and relaxation.

Aruba is a favorite destination among those who enjoy relaxing on the beach or engaging in water sports. The northwest coast of Aruba hosts several popular beaches, including Palm Beach, where travelers can board the submarine Atlantis, try parasailing, relax aboard a glass-bottom boat, or go kite-surfing in the beautiful waters. Scuba divers will also enjoy diving in the beautiful coral reefs and exploring shipwreck of Antilla, a German freighter that was sunk during World War II. Aruba is also famous for a gorgeous expansive countryside that can be enjoyed with half-day long horseback tours. Hikers can also visit Fontein Cave, which boasts natural stone pillars and cave paintings by the Amerindian population.

Belize is the perfect destination for those who enjoy exploring the jungle, learning more about the Ancient Maya civilizations, or snorkeling. Belize is home to the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere, providing ample opportunities for snorkeling and diving without having to travel to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Belize also boasts the largest cave system in Central America, perfect for exploration by both novices and expert spelunkers alike. Belize was also formerly the main center of the Maya population. Travelers can now visit several of the ancient Mayan ruins, including the Altun Ha, the tallest man-made structure.

While government and drug issues ravage most of Mexico, the tourist destinations along the Caribbean coast are still safe and popular tourist destinations. Cozumel, a 181 square mile limestone island, is perfect for the traveler who wants to visit Mexico but doesn’t want to be on the mainland. Cozumel offers pristine beaches and beautiful palm groves. Explorers can visit ancient Mayan ruins that date back to the year 1,000 AD. Families traveling with or without children will enjoy Chankanaab Park. At Chankanaab, travelers can swim with dolphins, watch an interactive sea lion show, snorkel in a beautiful reef, or visit a replica of a Mayan civilization.

The Caribbean also has a beach for every interest and personality. In Haiti, the La Tortue beach, once riddled with pirates, offers beaches almost completely untouched by man. The Dominican Republic’s Cabarete is popular for windwurfing and kiteboarding with steady winds around 20 to 25 knots half the year. Anguilla’s Rendezvous Bay is a favorite for beach strollers who just want to relax and take in the beautiful pristine waters and soft sand. People watchers and those interested in participating in the social scene will find St. Jean beach on St. Barts Island to be the perfect destination.

Whatever your interests are, the Caribbean is guaranteed to have something perfect for you. Those seeking adventure, culture, relaxation, or exploration will find a multitude of opportunities at any of the many Caribbean destinations.
