Wolf Creek Indian Village Museum

The museum sits off Interstate 77 along the Appalachian Mountains right at exit 58. It features Indian artifacts that were discovered through various archaeological digs made within the area. An Indian village is said to have existed in the area near the community of Bastian.

Kittiewan Plantation

Do not pass up the opportunity to visit this 18^th century Plantation in Charles County, Virginia. It houses the Archeological Society of Virginia, and feature archeological collections from the 18^th, 19^th up to the 20^th century. The plantation is open every second Saturday of the month but it is also possible to schedule a special visit by appointment.

Essex County Museum and Historical Society

The museum can be found within the old Colonial Revival style Maddox-Dillard Building. It showcases artifacts and exhibits highlighting the historical background of the Essex County as well as Virginia’s Tappahannock area. Visitors will have the opportunity to browse through the various on-display artifacts and exhibits, including Saunder Wharf photographs and the Civil War memorabilia.

Pope-Leighey House

This Usonian House was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect. This 1200 foot house was build using various materials which include brick, glass, concrete, and wood.

The Museum of the Confederacy

This newly restored museum is dubbed as one of the most spectacular buildings in the US. It was built in 1818 and boasts of a gray-stuco exterior. It has become the home of a number of well-off families ever since it has been appointed the role of the Executive Mansion of the Confederate States of America. Confederate President Jefferson Davis took residence here along with his family during the US civil war. Today, the museum offers an expansive range of artifacts as well as period décor that can be found inside the mansion. Daily guided tours are offered in the museum.

Richmond National Battle Field Park

Visit the park and learn about the battle that took place in the area. It houses a large Confederate hospital and miles of original fortifications that is sure to interest the historian in you. You can begin your tour by checking out the Civil War exhibits at the Civil War Visitor Center.
